Therapy Tools for Middle & High School Students-Secondary interventions

THIS TRAINING IS FOR ALL PTS PROVIDERS (School-Based and Outpatient Settings) *Registration link will be emailed.

Course Description: This training provides educators, related-service providers, and support staff with a comprehensive understanding of how occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language therapy work together to support secondary life-skills students in special education settings. Participants will explore evidence-based practices for fostering functional independence, communication, motor skills, and daily-living readiness aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The course emphasizes collaborative, school-based service delivery; integration of therapeutic strategies into classroom routines; and the design of meaningful, age-appropriate life-skills activities. Through discussion, case examples, and hands-on demonstrations, participants will learn how to create accessible environments, embed therapeutic goals into instruction, and measure progress that supports successful transition to adult life.

Intended Learner Outcomes:  Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify effective collaborative practices among teachers, related-service providers, paraprofessionals, and families.
  2. List ways to apply OT-informed strategies to support students in developing functional daily-living skills such as self-care, fine-motor tasks, and vocational readiness.
  3. List classroom-friendly activities that promote motor planning, postural control, and physical accessibility for secondary students.
  4. Identify and describe how to incorporate speech and language goals into academic and life-skills activities such as social interactions, vocational tasks, and community-based instruction.
  5. List therapeutic strategies with measurable IEP goals that reflect functional, age-appropriate skills needed for post-secondary success.
  6. Explain how to monitor student progress using data collection tools to adapt interventions based on student needs and responsiveness.
  7. Describe how OT, PT, and SLP services contribute to transition planning, including community access, workplace readiness, self-advocacy, and independence.
