Course Description: This course will discuss the complex relationship between Behaviorists using evidence based, applied behavior analytic (ABA) methods and occupational therapists using sensory integration theory to address students’ behavioral, social and emotional needs in a school and/or clinic setting. For years the question “Is it sensory or behavior?” has been asked. Presenters will discuss background for each discipline and the differences, but also how to integrate services and collaborate to best support the student.
Intended Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
- Define the terms sensory processing and integration, sensory modulation, co-regulation, the ABC’s of behavior, antecedent interventions, reinforcement strategies, pairing/therapeutic rapport, environmental manipulation, and functions of behaviors.
- Describe the difference between sensory dysregulation versus behavioral skill deficits or learned behavior.
- Identify multidisciplinary interventions that honor sensory needs while shaping functional behavior.
- Describe how to develop integrated treatment plans using co-regulation, skill-building, reinforcement, and environmental modification.
